The Loudness feature on Yamaha stereo amplifiers is essentially a form of volume-dependent equalization Done properly, as in some mid 70's Yamaha receivers (set the overal volume level quite high and then adjust the "loudness level control" to bring the volume down), it can make very low level listening very acceptable. The "loudness" button on older components had no relationship to the sensitivity of the speakers, therefore just adding a preset amount of bass.
